A Former English Teacher Was Begging on Chennai's Streets. One Video Changed That.

Merlin moved to India from Myanmar decades ago, after she got married. She'd spent years teaching English before that. But when the family members she depended on passed away, she had no income and no support left, and at 81 years old she ended up begging on the streets of Chennai just to get through the day. She'd been living like that for six or seven years.

Mohamed Ashik, a 25-year-old content creator, came across her and stopped to talk. When he found out she used to teach English, he filmed a short clip about her and posted it on Instagram. It didn't take long to spread: Ashik set up an account for her, @englishwithmerlin, hoping it might bring in some help. It got her 500,000 followers in four days.

Ashik went further than just posting about her. He offered to pay her to make content in English, giving her an actual income instead of a one-off donation drive that dries up after a week. The attention also reached people who used to know her: her old house owner's family saw the video, reconnected with her, and helped get her placed in an old-age home in Royapettah, where she now has a roof and regular meals instead of a street corner.

None of this undoes six or seven years of homelessness at an age when most people are long retired and supported by family. But her situation changed because one person stopped, asked her story instead of walking past, and kept showing up afterward instead of letting the video be the whole gesture.
