Her Home Washed Away in Assam Floods. Three Weeks Later, She Won National Gold in Karate.

On July 19, floodwater rose into Janmoni Konwar's home in Bhogdoiporia Gaon, a village in Jorhat, Assam. It didn't just spoil furniture and belongings. It took the tarpaulin-roofed shelter her family was left living under, and with it, part of the livelihood they'd been counting on to fund her trip to the National Karate Championship in Delhi.

Konwar, 17, trains in Ashihara karate. With her usual training ground underwater and her family displaced, she had three days' notice and nowhere proper to prepare before the championship, held August 7 to 9. Reports describe her training on roads in the aftermath, without a dojo, without the routine she'd built her whole competitive career around.

She won gold anyway.

It's tempting to file this under "inspiring," full stop, and move on. But the specific details are what make it land: this wasn't a comeback after some abstract setback. It was training in the open, on roads, with three days to prepare, weeks after losing the roof over her head, competing against athletes who'd had a normal season. Her father, Dharmeswar Konwar, and her family stayed behind a shelter that wasn't really a home while she went to Delhi anyway.

Konwar has said she's aiming higher next: an Olympic medal in karate. Given what she just did with three days and no dojo, it's hard to bet against her.
