A Passenger Sketched a Portrait to Thank a Train Pantry Worker

Earlier in 2026, a short video from a Vande Bharat Express went viral for the simplest of reasons: a passenger stopped to say thank you to someone most travellers never really notice.

The passenger was an artist who posts on Instagram as @_d_awesome_art_. Over the course of the journey, he kept noticing one of the pantry staff working sincerely through his rounds, distributing meals, refilling water, clearing trays, handling the dozens of small, repetitive tasks that keep a train full of strangers fed for hours at a stretch. It's work that is designed to be invisible when it's done well.

A thank-you in pencil

Instead of a quick "thanks" on the way out, the artist took out paper and a pencil and sketched the man's portrait during the journey. He added a handwritten note of thanks to the drawing and handed it over before the train reached its station.

The video captured the staff member's reaction, a mix of surprise and an obviously unrehearsed smile. Afterwards, he went to show the drawing to his fellow workers on the train. Vande Bharat trains are Indian Railways' flagship semi-high-speed service, marketed heavily around speed, comfort, and modern interiors. The catering staff who run meal service on board rarely feature in any of that. They are on their feet for the length of the route, serving a packed train in narrow aisles, often juggling special requests and complaints, and the job comes with very little built-in recognition. Most passengers interact with them for a few seconds at a time.

That is why a gesture like this lands. Being seen and thanked as an individual, rather than as part of "the service," is rare enough in that role that a single pencil sketch clearly meant a great deal.

It wasn't a grand gesture. It cost the artist a few minutes and a sheet of paper.
